7 Lessons for My Brown Skinned Boy

Baby boy, you are are already so loved! We can't wait to meet you and raise you!

Written by Andre Osorio

1. You’ll be judged for your character, not color.

Some may see appearance, but they will judge based on actions. If you love God, follow the law, work hard, If someone judges you entirely based off appearance, they’re dumb. Pay no mind and move on.

2. You are an individual. You don’t belong to a group.

Some will try to pin you down to belong to a group. Whether it’s the “black community”, “latinos” or others. Don’t bite into it. It’s not your looks that define you. Your community is those that have been born again of God. The rest is a ploy to confuse you. Pay no mind to it.

3. Since you are not white, you’ll be given more opportunities.

You have the advantage of being considered “of color”. It’s not fair, but you will get awarded more scholarships, more job opportunities, and more loans for this. Take advantage of this and use it for the good.

4. White people are not out to get you.

In fact, white American Christians are the most generous people on earth. There will always be bad apples among the bunch, but remember: if you love God above all else and keep Him first, no weapon shall be formed against you. Be watchful but maintain peace and joy knowing there’s never been a better time to be alive than today.

5. You are not a victim.

Don’t believe what society, media, and even your peers tell you. Don’t let them dictate your thoughts. Don’t follow “groupthink”. If something does happen and you are the victim, forgive quickly, seek justice, and move on. The past doesn’t exist and the future is an illusion. Jesus has set you free. You are a free man!

6. Don’t take things personally.

People (& even your own thoughts) will betray you. People will freak out and expect you to be outraged too. Don’t believe them or your own thoughts about it. Even if someone does wrong you; forgive them and move on. It’s nothing against you, it’s a spiritual battle. Don’t take it personally. Stand up for what is right. Fight, if you must, but be quick to forgive. Don’t ever take something personally!

7. Most people won’t understand you.

And that’s okay. In fact, it’s better that way. You are not of this world. God just gave us these bodies so we can “borrow them” real quick. The majority of the world is never gonna think like you do. They won’t “get” you. Don’t try to convince them. They are blind and cannot see. Love God, family, and country, and God will make all things beautiful. You’ll see!

These beautiful words were written by my husband Andre. We want our son to grow up to be strong, have good character, and to love Jesus (of course, this last one is a personal decision he will have to make). It is important to us that we teach our son to never place his identity in his skin color; that knows how privileged and blessed he is in this life, and that there is no correlation between his skin color and his ideology, experiences, or success. We rebuke all aspects of the victim mentality that plagues all too many minorities, and desire for him to live as a victor in Christ!

With love,

Some encouraging scripture to go along with these lessons:

"And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them." Luke 6:31

"Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out." Proverbs 10:9

"More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." Romans 5:3-5

"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do... those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace... For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”... What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." Romans 8

"There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:28

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." Romans 12:2
